Why Liquid Drain Cleaning Solutions Are No Solution

Plumber unclogging a tub drain with an electric auger.Drain clogs. They’re one of those unfortunate parts of being a homeowner, no matter where you live.

Drain clogs are also one of those things that most homeowners deal with incorrectly.

What we mean is that many people believe that all they need for a good drain cleaning in Scotch Plains is a bottle of store-bought, liquid drain cleaning solution. But we couldn’t think of a worse way to deal with this particular plumbing problem.

Why Is That?

The problem is, the vast majority of these liquid drain cleaning solutions use corrosive chemicals to do the job. So sure, they’ll eat through whatever is clogging up your plumbing, but don’t expect it to stop there! Prolonged use of chemicals within your drain actually start degrading the pipe itself over time, until you’ll need to replace it—years earlier than you otherwise would have needed to.

These chemicals that are often found in liquid drain cleaners aren’t good for you, either. It’s quite easy to be accidentally exposed to the chemicals, whether it be inhaling the fumes, getting it on your skin, or even getting it in your eyes.

So, What’s the Right Solution?

The right answer is to contact a professional plumber to do your drain cleaning. We’re well aware that store-bought “solutions” are no solution at all—they do more harm than good! We’ll never use corrosive chemicals in our drain cleaning services. Instead, we make use of a variety of more effective methods.

This may include drain snaking, for example, which involves using an auger on a long cord to drill through any clogs in the pipe. This is the most traditional, and often easiest, way to remove drain clogs. Hydro-jetting is another popular method for removing any waste built up within the drain pipes. A hydro-jet is a thin hose equipped with an omnidirectional sprayer head attached to it. This hose sprays a high-pressure stream of water into the pipe, hitting all areas of the pipe walls and blasting any waste buildup out of the system. This method has become quite popular throughout the years, since it removes the current clog and makes it harder for further clogs to form in the future.

However, there are some pipes that can’t withstand the pressure of hydro-jetting, and therefore there is a variance in which solution will be best for different plumbing situations.

The most important thing to remember here is that professional plumbers will clean out your drains much faster and more thoroughly than you can do on your own with chemical drain cleaners. It might seem more expensive upfront. However, when you factor in how much longer your pipes will last and the fact that you won’t be going out every couple of months for another bottle of drain cleaner, you’ll actually be saving money in the long run.

So, if your drains are clogged, or even just in need of an annual cleaning, be sure to contact one of our professionals to tackle the job.
