Repair or Replace?

Eventually, you’ll have to decide whether or not it’s really worth repairing your heating system. Sometimes, a replacement unit is your only option. Other times, you have a tough decision to make. Here’s how you can tell that replacement is the better choice in the long run:

  • Repairs would be too costly. If repairing your furnace would cost about half the price of a brand new heating system, it’s probably not worth it. Having mismatched parts can further inefficiency, and the system still may break down sooner than you expect.

  • You make a lot of repairs. Components of your furnace have been failing far too frequently.

  • Your furnace is old. The life expectancy of many furnaces is only about 20 years. After this point, the system cannot run as efficiently as when it was brand new—and the chances of it breaking down when you really need it become much higher. Sometimes parts are no longer available/manufactured for the older furnaces. When your furnace becomes this old, the dangers of carbon monoxide inside your home from a crack is more prevalent.

Schedule Furnace Service before the Heating Season

One of the most important things you can do for your furnace is to schedule services BEFORE the heating season actually begins. Problems within your gas furnace can create safety issues over time. A technician can detect these before it gets cold and before you are consistently using your system.
