Is It Time to Upgrade Your Air Conditioner?

two-technicians-smiling-and-standing-over-outside-ac-unitFall is just around the corner, but for now, we’re still dealing with warmer temperatures. While cooler weather might be calling our names, this is no time to ignore your air conditioner.

After all, the end of the season is the most likely time for something to go wrong with your air conditioner. This is especially true if it’s an aging system–that is, once it’s 10-15 years old. Now, some of the signs of a failing air conditioner can be fixed with our repair services. But once your air conditioner reaches a certain age, it’s really time to consider an upgrade and replace your air conditioner. Read on to learn more!

Signs It Might Be Time to Replace Your Air Conditioner

So, when is it time to replace your air conditioner? This isn’t exactly a cheap investment, so you don’t want to make this decision too early. Like we mentioned above, old age definitely plays a factor here. Even when very well maintained, the best air conditioner is designed to last about 10-15 years. After this point, it’s almost always more economically beneficial to replace the system, especially if it’s also:

  • Having airflow issues. If there is low airflow or even low cooling power, it could be a sign of degrading ductwork or even refrigerant leaks.
  • Costing you way too much to operate. Take a look at your energy bills. Are they drastically higher than they were this same time last year? If so, it’s a sign that something in your home is working inefficiently, and it could very well be your old air conditioner.
  • Using R-22 refrigerant. This is an older form of refrigerant that has been phased out as of this year. The reason for this phaseout is because R-22 is bad for the environment. All of today’s newer air conditioning systems come with a newer, safer refrigerant.

“Do I Really Need to Replace the System Now?”

Temperatures are going to cool down in just another month or so, so why buy a new air conditioner now? Well, because you still have some hot weather to get through, and you can get through it a lot more reliably with an upgraded air conditioner that you know won’t unexpectedly die on you.

Plus, there’s no better time to start saving on energy costs than the present, right? Lastly, as we mentioned, R-22 refrigerant has been phased out. Now is a great time to get an air conditioner that will be more eco-friendly, especially since you have time to explore your options, providing your current air conditioner is still providing you with some comfort.
