Ice and Air Conditioners Don’t Go Together: Here’s Why!

ice-on-air-conditionerHave you recently noticed ice on the coils of your air conditioner? Are you wondering if it’s a normal thing? Ice and air conditioners are a bad combination. In the case of frozen coils, these usually result due to a refrigerant leak or a clogged air filter. The airflow in your system becomes uneven, so that coils are unable to stay warm. As the temperature of the coils drops, they freeze and are unable to function properly. This can prevent your AC from cooling well.

In the case of a refrigerant leak, it can lower the pressure levels of this coolant in your system. As a result, the internal temperature of the system falls, and ice forms over the coils. Refrigerant leaks are worrying due to other reasons too.  It’s the chemical substance responsible for actually cooling your home. Without it, or without enough of it, your compressor (the heart of your air conditioner) will struggle to perform and may even break down years before its time.

Here we highlight some of the most common signs that your AC coils may have ice on them. We also discuss what you can do to resolve the problem.

How Can You Tell If Your AC Coils Are Frozen?

Some of the easiest ways you can tell if your AC coils have ice on them include:

  • The unit is on but is not producing cool air.
  • There is visible moisture or condensation in the areas surrounding the AC as well as around your home. The appearance of moisture is a result of frozen evaporator coils that are unable to absorb moisture properly.
  • There is ice on the indoor or outdoor coils present in the unit.

Get Your AC Coils Inspected Today for Damage

If you have noticed ice forming on the coils of your air conditioner, it is best to ask an AC repair technician to investigate the issue and get it resolved immediately. The sooner you take care of the problem, the better.

Trying to resolve the problem yourself can lead to other issues. For example, if you try to thaw the ice present around the coils, this could cause lasting damage to the coils. In the end, you may have to pay even more money in getting the coils repaired or replaced.

The technician will also do more than just make sure your AC coils are no longer frozen. They will identify the root of the problem and take the necessary steps to resolve it. For instance, if the coils are frozen due to a clogged air filter or refrigerant leak, then a qualified repair technician can repair the leak and make sure the filter is no longer clogged.

This can provide you with a more lasting solution, and you won’t have to worry about frozen AC coils until the next time your AC undergoes maintenance.
