Drain Cleaning Advice from Professional Plumbers

hand gripping drain pipeDrain clogs and blockages are an unfortunate part of modern living, one that we all have to deal with at one time or another. However, clogs are also one of those things that homeowners deal with incorrectly. When a blockage develops in the average home, most people go out and get some store-bought drain cleaning liquid to manage the issue. This is actually a terrible way to deal with it!

Keep reading for some tips from the pros on why you should always have a plumber handle drain cleaning in your living space.

The Side Effects of Store Bought Drain Cleaners

There’s a good reason that store-bought drain cleaners are able to cut through clogs—it’s because the large majority of them use corrosive chemicals to do the job. These chemicals eat through whatever is clogging the pipe, but they don’t stop there.

Unfortunately, prolonged use of these liquid drain cleaners will actually degrade the pipe itself, to the point where it may need to be replaced years earlier than it otherwise would have been. The chemicals found in these solutions aren’t healthy, either. You can get ill by simply breathing in the fumes, and then if you accidentally touch your eye or your mouth after getting a little on you, it’s even worse.

Invest in Professional Drain Cleaning

Professionally trained and experienced plumbers are well aware that store-bought drain cleaners do more harm than good. This is why we don’t use any corrosive chemicals for our drain cleaning services. Rather, we use a variety of more effective methods. For instance, drain snaking is one method we use, which is when we use an auger on a long cord to drill through any clogs in the pipe. This is the oldest and often easiest, way to remove drain clogs.

Hydro-jetting is an increasingly common method, too. A hydro jet is basically a thin hose with an omnidirectional sprayer head attached to it. The hose sprays a high-pressure stream of water into the pipe, hitting all areas of the pipe walls and blasting any waste buildup out of the system. This method helps remove the current clog, but also makes it harder for further clogs to form in the future. It’s important to note that some pipes cannot withstand hydro-jetting. Be sure to reach out to our plumbers to see what your drain cleaning options are.

The most important thing to remember about drain cleaning is that a professional can clean out your drains much faster and more thoroughly than you can on your own. It may seem more expensive in the short term: however, when you factor in how much longer your drain pipes will last, you’ll end up saving money on replacement. So if your drains are clogged, or just in need of an annual cleaning, be sure to contact our pros to handle it for you.
